Northern Portugal
Northern Portugal is the country’s historic heartland, known for its rich cultural heritage, dramatic green landscapes, and a notably cooler and wetter climate than the south. The region is anchored by Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its Baroque architecture, picturesque Ribeira district, and the iconic Port wine produced across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. Inland, the terrain is dominated by the majestic, terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, another UNESCO site, and the rugged wilderness of the Peneda-Gerês National Park. This northern area offers a more traditional and authentic Portuguese experience, celebrated for its robust cuisine, historic cities like Guimarães and Braga, and the sincere warmth of its people.

Santo Tirso is a city and municipality located in the heart of Northern Portugal’s Porto District, strategically positioned near major hubs like Porto, Braga, and Guimarães. Historically, the city grew around the ancient Mosteiro de São Bento, but its economy is defined by a strong industrial identity, particularly within the textile and plastics manufacturing sectors, making it a key economic centre in the Ave Valley. Santo Tirso successfully blends its industrial roots with a high quality of life, offering a relaxed environment while benefiting from its proximity to urban amenities. The city is also developing a cultural and creative hub around the revitalized Fábrica de Santo Thyrso, promoting contemporary culture, design, and innovation.
